Solar Panels 101

First things first. How do solar panels work?

It’s important to understand that solar energy is the most abundant natural energy source on Earth, and on a basic level, solar panels help us capture and convert the rays from the sun into usable energy.

Did you know that the sun is made up of tiny particles called photons? This is what your panels will convert into electricity for your home.[1] Long story short, the sun creates endless energy that your panels can capture and (with the help of some super cool technology) convert into usable electricity. Without getting too technical, there are three main types of solar technologies.

  1. Solar Heating and Cooling: Solar Heating and Cooling (SHC) systems collect thermal energy to provide hot water and air heating or conditioning for your home.[2]
  2. Concentrating Solar Power: Concentrating Solar Power (CSP), although it uses the heat generated by the sun like SHC systems, it is more commonly used for traditional electricity-generating turbines in the case of power plants.[2]
  3. Photovoltaics: Photovoltaics are used to generate electricity from the sun that can be used to power anything from a small electronic to a home or large commercial business. Momentum Solar provides photovoltaic solar panel systems.2

Momentum Solar Now Offers Battery Storage!

Now that you’re an expert on how solar panels work and the type of panel installations Momentum Solar has to offer, let’s talk battery storage. Depending on where you live, when you produce excess power with your solar panels, the power could get sent back to the grid and you could be credited with a feature called net metering. The same sort of energy banking applies for solar battery storage! However, instead sending excess power to the grid, it gets sent and stored in your solar battery system at your home.

Essentially, homebuyers who choose to install battery storage can harness their extra power and save it for a rainy day – literally! Another bonus to installing battery storage is that your home has back-up power for you to use should there be an outage in your area.[3]

We are excited to offer battery storage to our homeowners thanks to our exclusive partnership with Enphase. The Enphase Encharge battery backup system seamlessly stores excess electricity produced by your solar panels and helps you break away from the grid whenever you want. In fact, homeowners can be completely independent from the grid by selecting when to pull electricity from the grid and when to pull from their battery.

To help homeowners with all sizing needs, we offer two modular options for battery storage.

Encharge 3: This storage system is a 3.36kWh battery unit that is flexible and scalable.

Encharge 10: For more capacity, the Encharge 10 boasts a 10.08 kWh battery without sacrificing its flexibility and scalability.

Go Solar: Top 5 Benefits When You Make the Switch

Making the switch to solar energy is an incredibly personal choice – and each homeowner decides to transition to clean energy for their own motives. However, the most common reasons are their passion to help the environment and the opportunity to dramatically cut down on energy costs.

While you certainly can reduce your carbon footprint and improve your home’s efficiency while potentially slashing monthly electricity costs, let’s explore these benefits a little deeper to see why so many Americans are making the switch.

1. Price-protected Energy

Over the past decade, the average cost of electricity has risen on average about 3% each year.1 By installing a solar energy system that meets your home’s needs, you can significantly reduce or eliminate the cost of electricity. These savings make a huge difference in the long run. By going solar, you are protecting yourself from rising energy costs and making your monthly utilities more predictable.[1]

Financial freedom is undoubtedly one of the biggest motivators out there. But what other reasons should homeowners consider before switching to solar?

2. Increase Your Property Value

Studies have shown that homes with solar panel systems saw an increased value and sold at higher prices than similar homes in the same neighborhood. In a study done by Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, a research laboratory affiliated with the Department of Energy, they looked into homes equipped with solar panels in 8 different states. The study lasted over 11 years and it was found that on average, homebuyers are “consistently willing to pay PV home premiums” of approximately $4 per watt of installed solar capacity.”[2] For a standard 6-kilowatt solar PV system, this means that solar can add $24,000 to your home’s resale value.”1

Long story short, solar panels will help increase the value of your home!

3. Reduce that Energy Bill… Or Better… Eliminate It!

By making the switch to solar, you can eliminate or drastically reduce your monthly electric bill. On average, the monthly utility bill is $100, and at the end of the year you’ve dished out a whopping $1,200 to keep the lights on the plugs functional. Now, multiply that out over the course of the expected 20 years you’ll spend in your home.

After two decades, you’ve spent more than $24,000 on your electric bill. That doesn’t even take into account the roughly 4% yearly increase from the electrical company. Essentially, if you install a PV solar panel system on your home that covers 100% of your needs, whatever you would have spent on that electricity bill, stays in your wallet and out of the hands of utility companies.1

4. Great Return on Investment

Many people look at solar panels as an expense, but what if we told you that it is actually an investment. The average homeowner will pay off their system in roughly eight years and can earn a strong ROI by receiving free electricity for the remainder of their systems 25+ year lifespan. 1 Think about it, if you paid off your system and become completely independent from the grid, all of the money you would have spent on your system or electricity bill can be put towards other expenses or into a savings account for future use. List some fun things to spend extra cash on here – vacations, kids’ college expenses, etc

5. Protect the Environment

One of the biggest factors, if not the biggest motivators for eco-friendly homeowners, is going solar to help the environment. Solar panels help address environmental issues like climate change and health problems caused by carbon emissions. In a study done by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, “the average household emits approximately 20 metric tons of carbon pollution each year. By installing a solar power system, a typical two-person household reduces their carbon emissions by three to four tons annually.”1
