Even though many of us know about the age-old benefits of solar energy, those with panels or those who are looking to add them to their home should get ready for the next big energy must-have…. These revolutionary solar support products provide additional freedom from the grid, ways to earn money from the utility companies and help you make the most of your solar energy system.
Do you know what we’re talking about? If you guessed battery storage, give yourself a pat on the back! Fortunately, we have all the information you need to become an expert on the topic! Just keep reading…
What is Battery Storage?
When you add a battery storage system to your panels, you have complete control over your electricity. Battery storage systems work by capturing energy produced by your solar panels and storing it for later use. The higher your battery’s capacity, the more solar energy you can store in it. This stored energy is now being utilized at your home instead of the being sent back to the utility grid. If your solar panels are producing more electricity than you need, the excess energy goes towards charging the battery. Later, when your solar panels aren’t producing electricity, you can draw down the energy you stored earlier in your battery to offset utility use at night.
Momentum Solar is proud to be an exclusive partner with Enphase and offer the most robust battery storage system on the market. Each system is designed based on the customers overall usage and desired off grid capabilities. You would be surprised at how much you can power!
What Can an Enphase Battery Backup System Power?
To understand how this works on a larger scale, think of battery storage like your car’s fuel tank. The more conservatively you drive, the more miles per gallon you will get. let’s look at the difference between the two measurements of power; we promise not to bore you with the technical details!
Amps (A): Measure of a current
Kilowatts (kW): Measure of power
Kilowatt Hours (kWh): This is a measure of how much energy you are using by an appliance or other device over the course of an hour. Battery storage systems are sized and designed based on this measurement.
In order to determine the correct sized battery storage system for you, we first need to identify what it is you are looking to back-up and for how long. Below are some examples of how we get that info:
- Microwave – 1 KW, if used for .5 hr = .5KWH (avg. use over a 24 hour period)
- Electric oven (1 burner)- 1.56 kW, if used for 1.5hr = 34KWH (avg use per day during an outage or at night)
- Refrigerator – 0.78 kW, if used for 3hr (15 min per hour over 12 hrs)= 34KWH
- Standard flat screen LED TV (2) – .4KW, if used for 6hrs = 4KWH
- Internet/ cable router – 0.2KW, if used 12hrs = 4KWH
The Enphase Encharge 10 is our typical base model and boasts a whopping 10.1 kWh energy capacity. This means you can power all five of the above listed items at once!
How Much Power Do You Need?
Now that you know the basics of what a solar battery can power, let’s determine how much power you need and what you plan to back up. Since the average home in the United States has a daily consumption of approx. 28.9 KWH, you would need a lot of power to run everything simultaneously. However, it is unlikely that you will be running every single appliance in your home at the same time. Whether you’re looking to run a few appliances (such as a refrigerator and microwave) in a blackout or power larger items in your home, battery storage is the answer. Our team will help calculate the precise kWh you need to store to keep your home running whenever you need it.
To provide homeowners with this custom sizing, Momentum offers two different types of battery storage systems through Enphase.
Encharge 3: This storage system is a 3.36kWh battery unit that is flexible and scalable. (this unit is typical sold as an addition to the encharge 10 but in certain cases can be offered as a stand alone unit).
Encharge 10: For more capacity, the Encharge 10 boasts a 10.08 kWh battery without sacrificing its flexibility and scalability.
