By the Numbers

According to a recent report, Florida topped all U.S. states in solar installations in 2023 [1]. This accelerated transition to solar energy is monumental, offering a sustainable alternative to conventional power sources and positioning Florida at the forefront of America’s renewable energy movement.

Florida’s solar rise is exciting since the achievement is more than just an environmental victory. With solar energy, residents can anticipate a decrease in their utility bills, making solar not only a sustainable choice but also a financially smart one. Additionally, with the ongoing climate crisis, Florida residents’ move to solar power demonstrates their proactive approach to combat global warming and reduce carbon emissions.

Going Solar in Florida

Florida’s residents can benefit from both state and federal solar incentives. The state offers multiple solar incentives, which can significantly reduce the initial installation costs. On top of these state incentives, residents can also take advantage of federal tax credits. However, the cherry on top is that the Sunshine State’s abundant sunlight can translate to more energy generation and savings in the long run.

State Incentives [2]

The Solar and CHP Sales Tax Exemption eliminates the Florida sales tax of 6% on the costs of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems. This exemption is designed to cover the retail rate of solar panels, solar heaters and combined heat and power systems. Suitable for residential, commercial and agricultural applications, it is essential for solar equipment to be certified by the Florida Solar Energy Center.

The Property Tax Abatement for Renewable Energy Property ensures that the installation of solar systems won’t lead to an increase in property tax, even if the overall value of the property rises due to the solar addition. This means homeowners are shielded from paying extra property taxes because of the increased property value from their solar installations. This valuable exemption will remain in effect until December 2037.

Federal Incentives [2]

The Federal Solar Tax Credit, also known as the Investment Tax Credit (ITC), offers homeowners a significant financial incentive for going solar. Specifically, you can claim a tax credit equivalent to 30% of your solar installation costs. To take advantage of this credit, homeowners can simply claim it on their annual federal tax declaration for the same year they installed their solar system. Make sure to consult a professional when filing your taxes.

Net Metering

Solar panels often produce more energy than a home requires, especially during peak sunlight hours. With net metering, homeowners can send excess solar energy back to the local electric grid and earn credits on their utility bills. The local electric company uses a smart meter to measure surplus solar generation, giving homeowners a deduction from their monthly electricity bill for any surplus solar energy sent back. If solar generation credits exceed consumption in any given month, the surplus rolls over to the next month.
